Where do your thoughts go when you look at the image above?
"Love the surfboards." "I love the beach." "Got to watch out for sharks." "I hate getting sand everywhere."
We can all look at exactly the same image and have completely different thoughts, associations and reactions. Our minds are constantly noticing, interpreting, remembering, predicting, comparing and making meaning from what we experience.
And most of the time, this happens automatically.
Have you ever stopped to notice your thoughts?
We have thousands of thoughts and mental shifts throughout the day, yet we often don't notice them until one particular thought catches our attention. We might say, "Oh, I had a thought..." — but that was probably just one of many thoughts that had already passed through your mind.
Our thoughts can be helpful, interesting, creative and insightful. They can also be anxious, critical, repetitive or unhelpful. Sometimes we believe our thoughts without stopping to question them.
Learning to notice how we think can give us a little more space between having a thought and automatically acting on it.
So, what has your mind been thinking about today?
